We had a wonderful snowflake breakfast and last day of school. We completed our study of the festivals of light with fireworks for  the New Year. Have safe, peaceful, joyful holidays!

We bent 5 toothpicks and dropped water drops in the middle. We were amazed as the sticks moved out into the shape of the star! Capillary action at work.

Bumblebees and friends worked on building bridges today. They began with simple bridge designs before becoming more elaborate. In the end they increased height, width, side walls, length and strength. Students added on and off ramps to their bridges, experimenting with style, shape and form until their bridges worked and looked just right.

Together with the Ladybugs and Alchemists, the Bumblebee class worked on a STEAM project using ramps. The students built ramps and then used many different objects to roll, slide, bump and jump down the ramps. They looked at velocity and mass with heavier and lighter objects. They tried different angles. Then they added pads and tape to create friction for those objects moving down the ramps. Finally they used the I-pads to photograph and video the progress down the ramps, creating some amazing videos both moving forward and in reverse.

A wonderful Thanksgiving celebration at Seabury! We took our gratitude pumpkins which we have been working on all month. We talked about what we are all grateful for! Even the middle school was there! We ate delicious food which we all had made. Ladybugs and Bumblebees made chocolate cookie acorns. We shared food and friendship together. Happy Thanksgiving!

An exciting culminating experience today for our study of transportation. We took the bus to the Light Rail station in downtown Tacoma today, then took the Light Rail to the end stop, near our middle school. We walked to the donut shop where we all got to choose a delicious donut, then walked over to visit the middle school. We finished our walk by heading back to the station, boarding the Light Rail on the return trip and then back to school on the bus!

In our latest STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) project students worked to design a roadway from multiple colors of tape along which a toy car could drive. What surface would give the car the best chance of movement? They then engineered how to attach magnets to little cars in a way that they could use other magnets to either attract or repel the cars. Which worked better for car motion, attract or repel? What effect did the tape have on the function of the magnet? Finally, they worked to move their magnet powered cars along the roadway structures they had created.

We learned about several harvest festivals from different countries; Samhain from Ireland, Halloween in the United States, and Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico. These pictures show their sugar skull designs on paper and on the cookies we made.

We had a wonderful celebration last Thursday. We played bingo, laced spiderwebs, and threw beanbags in the windows of a haunted house. We also had delicious snacks and a wonderful parade and picture! Thanks so much to Ladybug and Bumblebee parents, especially Jessica, Patti and Kirsty!
